Book Lust

October 28th, 2008 by admin

I was just in Barnes and Nobles walking around, looking for a programming book that I have wanted to buy for a while now. As I walked through the store and my eye wondered. I looked at all the colorful book covers, I looked at all the titles of each book section, amazed at how every book was arranged so neatly and in order, I stood and stared. I then walked over to a section picked up a book and ran my fingers across a cover and it all came rushing back to me. The reason I have not been in a book store recently, the reason I have not picked upĀ  a book to read in a while. The reason I felt I was in a candy store as soon as I walked into the store. I love books.

A major problem for me when I walk into a book store is that by the end of my stay I want to leave with about 10 books but nothing annoys me more than owning an unread/unfinished book. It is so frustrating to want to read/learn something but do not have the time. When I see books with great presentation and packaging, on interesting topics, I just want to eat them. I love information and I just cannot get enough of it, in fact I am so passionate about learning new things that sometimes I can relate with Syler (In Heroes) problem. His hunger for a new power, to understand it, to learn it and to use it, which actually drives hm to kill people to obtain these powers. Well I am not that bad but sometimes I wish I lived in a book store. My friend Obilo once said he wants to sleep in a room like the one Evey in V for Vendetta woke up in, filled with books.

Waking up to a gallery of Ideas, to a gallery of perspectives must be inspiring. I want a room just like that. I also recall my professor in my ethics class who said It would be amazing if her brain was constantly connected to the internet (Wikipedia). I totally wish the same too. There is so much to know, so much to learn but not enough time.

I know exactly what you mean, both about the book store feeling and about so much knowledge so little time. I love having a tangible book rather than reading programming manuals via the web of PDF.

In related news I just ordered a programming book on Amazon the other day…should arrive this week and I am very excited.

I know what you mean. I get that rush too even though I would not consider myself to be a big fan of books. where do you get your pictures from, I like them….

Good post, b. That’s a nice picture. Like one from a kids’ book. Something that makes bookstores more tempting (especially Barnes and Noble) is how they arrange ALL the stuff around where you will be. e.g.you’re going up the escalator, and first thing you see on the new floor is a humble table of books with a label ‘recommended reading’. When I see that, I always go check it…cause i’m thinking ‘if these guys have a million books on their shelves, but they’re recommending THESE ones…I should get at least one or two from this table’. Still marketing ;o

You slice, where you be at?
