Waking in dreamland
October 20th, 2008 by adminI was talking to a friend the other day about the cool things I can do when I sleep. Things like Waking up EXACTLY when I want to without an alarm clock and how I used to be able to continue a dream from where I left off. While I was bantering away she asked me two questions that I thought were mundane at the time but have occupied my mind for many hours after that conversation, leading up to this post.

What language do you dream in? What colors do you dream in? she asked. “English” I said “and my dreams are in the same color as my vision” I continued. “Are you sure?” she asked. At first I was sooo sure, but when she asked me to think more about it, the more I thought the more doubtful I was. Dreaming in English I was pretty sure of, it is my primary and most expressive means of communication but the color of my dreams eluded me. I remember dreaming as I see but for some reason I doubted that was how I dreamt. She also asked if I thought I dreamt as I saw because that is what I expect or if that is how I really dreamt.
The conversation went on and on but what was interesting to me was how similar life is to dreaming. What is the difference between the way I thought I dreamt and the way I REALLY dreamt? Our reality is based solely on our perception, the way we think things are is actually the way they REALLY are to us. What we see and feel is our reality as supposed to what is really there. It is amazing the power of the mind and how it shapes our individual worlds. This raises big questions like Why do we dream? How do we know we are awake? What is real?
It is suprising to know that upon all the scientific break throughs scientists have achieved they have not discovered the reason for our dreams or their meainings. Due to similarities between life and dreams I cannot help but wonder if the meaning of our lives are in the answer to the meaning of your dreams.

i used to ask myself why we dream, and i kind of have a wild explanation based on my fascination and love for sleep. based on experts, the reason we sleep is to refresh the brain and not necessarily the body. refreshing the brain essentially means maintaining and repairing the neurons associated with memory. so if you look at it from this point, it sorts of make sense since memories are simply electro-chemical pulses passed along neurons. in the course of repairing or maintaining the neurons we may be unconsciously triggering memories in a random fashion which constitutes a dream. the order we perceive in the dream could be our brains trying to put order in this randomness leading to a fantastic experience.
crazy theory, but makes sense to some degree

I read that we need to sleep because the mind needs to repair itself as you said but that process is only a fraction for the time we are actually sleeping. It was even interesting to find out that this process can occur even when your not sleeping (Like feeling refreshed after u have laid on your bed for a long time not doing anything).
I would totally agree with your theory about while arranging information, memories are triggered and can be turned into dreams, but I have had SEVERAL dreams that actually came true EXACTLY as it was in the dream, so I am a bit skeptical in just concluding they are merely random memories mixed up together

well I have actually thought along the line of what you were saying about dreams. But what actually boggles my mind is what instigates a dream. I know that is a little deep, but think about it, what makes your mind dictate the particular dream u have at night
